Gitmo detainee does not equal terrorist. While I would not advocate for an uncritical opening of arms to any and all former Gitmo detainees, I would also point out that what the folks in Amherst are acknowledging is something that seems grievously absent from most conversation around this on the political stage - the fact that we ALL bear some responsibility to those who, against international laws and our own, were unlawfully detained and abominably treated by We the People of the United States. We must find ways to acknowledge the wrong we have done there and be honorable enough to try in some measure to from now on deal fairly with these people. And yes - we must keep ourselves safe by sorting out those who pose us a risk.

This is no different from what we do every day, sorting out killers and rapists and pedophiles and even terrorists from the general population. Our laws, our law enforcement, and our humane, democratic values are up to the task if only we demand this of our government and ourselves.

Move the ct probate courts to the ct superior. Close down the office of the probate court administrator that alone will save the state over $4,000,000. The probate court administrator’s office is useless.
Judge Knierim makes over 150,000 per year plus perks and he calls this reform, Shame on you Judge. Quote from Judge Knierim "My charge is to find common ground and build consensus among all who will be affected,'' Knierim said. http://blogs.courant.com/rick_green/2008/08/give-simsbury-probate-judge-pa.html It appears that all who will be affected are the probate judges, look like Judge Knierim does not believe the people of Connecticut are part of all “who will be affected” Maybe it’s time for Judge Knierim to head back to Simsbury and run that probate court full time, He is way over his head in this job.

This quote is from the Probate court administrator Judge Paul Knierim “The probate system is a crucial safety net for Connecticut families,” said Judge Knierim. “They count on its services during some of the most stressful moments of their lives. We must not let them down.” http://www.ctprobatejudges.org/article4.html. Well Judge, you have let a lot of families down under your watch as probate court administrator.
You have a probate judge working under you that has been sited for violating professional conduct by the State Wide Grievance Committee, You have other Probate Judges that just simply do not know the law or totally disregard it. But then again the probate court administrator’s office runs just the same as the probate courts do, wrong answers, unreturned calls and so on. Judge Knierim what you should have done was lead by example but then again I guess you did, you are a probate judge. The Judges that I speak of that don’t know the probate laws are attorneys, so you can’t blame that one on the non attorney probate judges.

I agree with you. A single payer system will be a disaster for this country. It will reduce, not improve the level of healthcare we now have available tous. Many of the problems in Washington originate with representatives who tell their constitutents the government will give them everything for free. Courtney's votes are proof he is part of the problem, not the solution. Congress is pulling us down to the lowest common denominator, not lifting up those who truly need assistance to get on their feet.

With your support and that of other 2nd Congressional District voters I hope to go to Washington to stop the excessive spending, limit government's interference in our lives, and help put us on the correct path. As a former Reagan appointee at the US Dept. of State I know what can happen when government concentrates only on doing what we can't do for ourselves. That menas a strong national defense, it doesn't mean federal social programs that bankrupt hard-working families. I hope that you will join my campaign and allow me to serve you and represent your interests in Washington. My views on the issues are on the campaign web site at novakforcongress.com

Great reply:

I have watched more than 100 videos on campus with "Open air: dialogue where Freedom of Speech is suppose to be available.

IF the person doesnt like the topic, they find a group to shut it down.

Look what they did to Jesus Christ.

While I agree that free speech should be protected, particularly in the case of unpopular views, and I also agree that the behavior of these students was shameful and anti-intellectual, I take issue with the claim that professors are somehow brainwashing students. You hear this in the news all the time, and I can tell you, as someone who has spent a lot of time in universities, that the narrow-minded brainwashers are in the minority. I'm not even sure that they're that effective. Students are far more influenced by their peers and their curiosity about media and viewpoints to which they have not previously been exposed.

I think to claim that professors in universities brainwash students is dangerously reductive. Universities have always - from the dawn of Western civilization - been, by definition, culturally "liberal" in that they have challenged the status quo. Professors do not seek to impose specific viewpoints on their students, but - by definition as they do their jobs - they question the status quo. Perhaps in doing so students come to conclusions critical of that status quo, but in nearly all of the classes which I have attended and, more recently, taught over the years, I have consistently seen professors encourage critical thinking, challenging students in their orthodoxy - whether that orthodoxy be "conservative," "liberal," or something else entirely. There were no "right" answers, and even the favored viewpoints of professors were continually questioned.

The point of a university education is to give people the tools they need to think and communicate. Not to tell people what to think. Whenever we assume that universities are programming students, we devalue the very real intellectual work that both students and professors do. We reduce learning to a performance, education to a piece of paper.

Congressman Trancedo's speech should be protected. And so should the speech of (peaceful!) protesters. And the professors? They should be permitted to speak for themselves.

Hi Carl,

I've enjoyed your blog now that I discovered it. We need more info like this about Vernon! I recently started my own Vernon blog (less political, more a family-eye view of Vernon though still with a goal of getting people involved at all levels in Vernon). I've linked you on my blogroll of local blogs. If you have a blogroll, please consider linking me as well! The link is: http://vernonneighbor.wordpress.com

I'll keep checking in!

Blagojevich has been so successful at making himself and his office look ridiculous that about a million people are now able to remember and maybe even spell his crazy name -- that's sort of like an accomplishment, right?

Has anyone looked into the LA tape as a matter for Homeland Security ? Seeing Obamais running for the top of the chain of command it only reasons that you look into any associations with known terrorists. We cant have a terrorist loving President. Unless he has something to hide where is the hard. Wait its the hard question again. the DNC says run a way.
Under the Patriot Act they don’t have to give it to GOP but they do have to turn it in to Homeland Security .
email your congressman NOW put the word out to all that will listen.

Why isnt Barack Obama not opening up a huge lead on John McCain?

All the factors point to a very large Obama win but its not materializing.

I would really like you to come to

AmericaLives.wordpress.com

and post why you think this lead isn’t coming to past. Can anyone explain this ? Give it a shot

I agree with these sentiments to the word. This is basically how I felt when I heard our former U.S. Senator from Texas, current vice chairman of Swiss bank UBS (and another political crook at-large...) Phil Gramm make the comment that Americans are in a "mental recession".

This is an insult to every American who has lost a jobs, homes or even their families due to the wild machinations of the economy. Much of this has ben precipitated by and aggravated by legislation intended to be favorable to many large corporations to the detriment of the stability of America's backbone: those of us who - on a daily basis - go to their jobs on a daily basis and who aer the manual funtionallity of this economy.

These politicians (and actually the substance of the governmental process itself) are materially so far removed from who they represent and what they were elected by these people to do, that they no longer capable of even a feeble attempt at representative politic. Let Them eat Cake - indeed!!!
