Dear Mr. Carey:
| I |
would like to bring to your attention an observation in the Rt 30 area of Vernon, CT. Between the points of 550 Hartford Turnpike (Sacred Heart Church) and 695 Hartford Turnpike (First Church of Vernon) is a traffic jam that occurs every business day between the hours of 4:30pm and 6:30pm, or rush hour. The distance between these two points is 3100 feet. I estimate 150 cars* sit in traffic for 10-20 minutes, not able to flow because of the traffic light at Rt 30 and Bolton Rd. Idling for 2 hours, I estimate 100 gallons(±) per day is used or 25,000 gallons per year. As well as the everyday commuter is sitting in traffic one hour a week.
Perhaps the State of Conn DOT can review this traffic jam or maybe the Vernon Police Dept can consider having a police officer clear the traffic quicker by manual use of the traffic light. In years past, the Police Dept used to help direct traffic at both Rt 30 & Bolton Rd as well as Rt 30 & Tunnel Rd as part of their regular duties each week night.
Thank you for taking the time to review this matter. Please call if you have any questions, my day telephone is 860-872-0055.

Estimates: *The average car is 14 feet long & allowing for distance margin front to back I used 20 feet of space per car. ± Oakridge National Laboratory estimates the average 6 cylinder car (Toyota, Taurus or Honda) idles at 1/3 gallon per hour. |
