The BOE currently employees part time employees. Some are paraprofessionals and some are teachers (albiet not many). However, it is not appropriate to compare a public k-12 program with a college since the majority of college professors are teaching part-time on the off semesters while pursuing research. We are not opposed to hiring, if we can find, part-time staff when it would be wasteful and unnecessary to hire a full-time employee. To make that a standard practice is just not conducive to hiring unless all school systems followed such a practice.
Also, a reminder that the BOE went to arbitration with our teachers and while we "won" in the first and third years you never know how an arbitrator will go. We have saved substantial dollars in our health insurance account by increasing co-pays, deductibles and changing available plans.
