The use of part time teachers was brought up to the Vernon Education system recently.
UConn was mentioned as a nearby higher education school that uses part time teachers. Some people have told me their children attending UCONN rarely see their professor, in person, but the course teacher assists the Professor. Here’s a quote from a page I found at the UCONN website. “Summer and part-time work opportunities are an excellent way to gain experience in the work world. ” Link to the page: www.career.uconn.edu/summer_jobs_part_time.html
So if higher education colleges use part-time help then maybe our towns need to, at least, review the possibilities. I also found other jobs in that are part-time permanent & seem to follow the same question, “Do we need to hire part time people to balance the budget and the needs .”
In the
Eastern Connecticut region, I found jobs current filled as Part-time.
Part-time School Superintendent, Sterling, CT, Part-time Professors, UCONN, Storrs, CT Part-time Police Officer found in over 20 towns in Eastern Conn. (1)Part-time, Patrol Officer, Parks & Recreation, East Hartford, CT. Many towns still use constables and auxiliary Police Officers such as the Conn State Police & Enfield Police Dept as well. The CT State Police Auxiliary volunteer their time and are covered under Conn Workers Compensation for full-time benefits in the event of a claim. Police Officers and Constables, whether fulltime or part-time must have the same M.P.T.C. Conn certification to perform police work. statute law CGS 7-294d.

Any fiscally responsible person would at least have to review the possibilities.
Call it what you like, ReEvaluation, Re-evaluation, or Reval. Re-evaluation (and Mill Rates) count only if there is A bill to pay.”

The BOE currently employees part time employees. Some are paraprofessionals and some are teachers (albiet not many). However, it is not appropriate to compare a public k-12 program with a college since the majority of college professors are teaching part-time on the off semesters while pursuing research. We are not opposed to hiring, if we can find, part-time staff when it would be wasteful and unnecessary to hire a full-time employee. To make that a standard practice is just not conducive to hiring unless all school systems followed such a practice.
Also, a reminder that the BOE went to arbitration with our teachers and while we “won” in the first and third years you never know how an arbitrator will go. We have saved substantial dollars in our health insurance account by increasing co-pays, deductibles and changing available plans.
